Food Drive for STEM Grants!

It’s that time of year again…time to be thankful for what we have and appreciate each other. It is also a time to consider those who suffer from food insecurity, and, unfortunately, there are many in Orange County.

CVES hosts food drives yearly, bringing in thousands of pounds of food to our local shelters. This year CVES has partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank in Orange County to be part of an amazing food drive and education campaign called, “Ray of Sunshine”. This is an event is sponsored by Dole Packaged Foods and FOOD Share, Inc.

Last year, a school in Ventura County, Tierra Linda, participated in the same drive (previously called “The Spirit of Giving”) and managed to collect 12,000 lbs of food. Dole and Captain Planet Foundation provided that winning school with a $1000 STEM grant and a school garden.

They are repeating their campaign to provide STEM grants to winning schools with the most pounds of food donated. We think CANYON VISTA can bring in more than 12,000 lbs!!!

Despite incentives, our students would sponsor a food drive, but it would be even more special to have our hard-working students obtain a grant to help fund the needs of many STEM-related activities and their associated technologies (i.e., chrome books and our out-dated computer lab), that our school district can not fully support.

This is when we ask for your help:

Please donate items between in our 2-week contest time: 11/27 (the day we come back from break) and December 8, 2017. We will gladly accept donations from the community, and they can be dropped off at our school on weekdays during office hours 7:30-3:00 PM.

Items Requested for Donation:

Canned proteins (tuna, ham, salmon and chicken)

Canned or dried fruits

Canned vegetables

Canned soup

Dried beans

Rice and pasta

Cereals

Peanut butter (and jelly)

The participating Food Banks will track/calculate the donations from all the sources to determine the winning schools that will be awarded donations for their STEM programs.
